Actions During the Story
Actions Before the Story
Setalle Anan was born in the borderlands in 902 NE as Martine Janata. In 917 NE Martine Janata went to the White Tower to train to become an Aes Sedai. She spent 5 years as a novice and 4 years as accepted. She was raised to the Brown Ajah in 926 NE. Many said that due to her love of travel, adventure, and men she should have picked the green. She would respond that she wouldn’t mind having three or four warders, not just for carrying books.
Martine studied ter’angreal; specifically, how they work and what they do. She also studied ter’angreal of unknown use. It was during her study of an unknown Ter’Angreal in 973 NE she was burned out and knocked unconscious. It wasn’t until 3 days after the incident that she was found. Her warder had died from the shock of her burning herself out.
She slipped out of Tar Valon as soon as she was well enough. Sometime thereafter she changed her name to Setalle. She was sick and starving on the streets of Ebou Dar when she was found and nursed back to health by Jasfer Anan with the help of his mother. Setalle and Jasfer later fell in love and married. Setalle almost died during her first childbirth but was saved by the Kin. The couple has five children, three girls, and two boys. Setalle opened an inn called the Wandering Woman in Ebou Dar, while Jasfer is a successful fisherman.
New Spring
Setalle was still an Aes Sedai at this time and was likely studying ter'angreal in the Tower, but she is not present in the book.
Actions Between the Books

Lord of Chaos
Setalle first comes into the story when Mat chooses her inn, the Wandering Woman. She greets Mat and his party, and the dice stops rattling in Mat’s head. The group takes rooms at the inn, and Setalle’s daughters take turns watching over Olver. Setalle thinks Mat is an endearing scoundrel and is quite fond of him. She states that because of Mat’s luck, he should give her husband advice on where to fish.
A Crown of Swords
While Nynaeve and Elayne visit Mat at the Wandering Woman, Setalle chastises them for impersonating Aes Sedai. The women attempt to argue with Setalle, but she does not pay them any heed. Setalle says that Nynaeve might be old enough to be a sister, but Elayne surely is not. Setalle tells Nynaeve and Elayne that she knows a group of women who can help them.
Setalle takes Nynaeve and Elayne to the Kin, showing them off to many people along the way. When they arrive at the Kin’s building, Reanne is upset with Setalle for bringing the women to the Kin. Setalle and Reanne both apologize to each other. The Kin interrogate Nynaeve and Elayne and determine that they may have trained in the tower but that there is no way they are full Aes Sedai. The Kin attempt to persuade Nynaeve and Elayne to stop pretending to be Aes Sedai, and offer to help them. When Nynaeve and Elayne refuse to retract their claims, the Kin tells them to leave the city, and kicks them out of the building.
Path of Daggers
Setalle does not appear in this book.
Winter's Heart
Setalle allows Mat to store gold and clothes in the Wandering Woman in order to facilitate his flight from Ebou Dar. Setalle has been hiding Joline Maza, an Aes Sedai, and her warders from the Seanchan that now control the city. Even though the Wandering Woman is filled with Seanchan patrons, Setalle risks her livelihood by hiding the Aes Sedai and warders in her inn’s basement.
During one of Mat’s trips to the inn, Setalle introduces Mat to Joline. Setalle tells Joline that Mat is a good man, and will help her escape the city. Setalle sells the Wandering Woman Inn. Setalle’s family has fled Ebou Dar on Jasfer’s fishing boats. Setalle plans on escaping the city with Mat, and later meeting up with her family in Illian.
Setalle has fled Ebou Dar with Mat, Egeanin, Bayle, Thom, the three Aes Sedai, Tuon, and a few others. They travel with Valan Luca’s menagerie. Setalle shares a wagon with Tuon and Selucia, and often accompanies Mat and Tuon when they go on strolls.
Crossroads of Twilight
Setalle watches as Bethamin and Seta are held in flows of air by one of the Aes Sedai in their wagon while Joline repeatedly slaps Bethamin across the face. Mat enters the wagon because he can sense women channeling and tries to intervene on Bethamin’s behalf. Mat is slapped by Joline for his efforts. Mat responds by pulling her over his knee and spanking her bottom. While Mat is spanking Joline, his amulet goes ice-cold; someone is channeling at him, the flows fall apart as they try to touch him. Setalle states that Mat must have a Ter’Angreal that unravels weaves, much like one that Cadsuane has. The Aes Sedai want to know how Setalle knows about ter’angreal, Cadsuane, and testing for the shawl. Setalle responds by telling them that she is an innkeeper, and when people visit her inn, they talk, sometimes more than they should. Setalle agrees with Mat that he shouldn’t have to put up with being hit by a woman he saved.
Setalle continues to show a curious amount of knowledge about Aes Sedai and the One Power. While alone Mat asks her if she is Aes Sedai, Setalle admits to Mat that she used to be, but she was burned out. Setalle tells Mat she knows he is infatuated with Tuon, and they agree to keep each other’s secrets. Setalle departs the menagerie and continues traveling with Mat and the Band of the Red Hand. Tuon gives a fond farewell to Setalle as she departs with Furyk Karede, telling her that she enjoyed their talks.
Knife of Dreams
Setalle travels with the Band of the Red Hand, but does not have any impact on the plot.
The Gathering Storm
Mat meets with Setalle and asks her to watch over Olver while he is away in the Tower of Ghenjei. He tells her that if she hasn’t found a Gateway to Illian so she can rejoin her family by the time he returns, that he will find one for her. He also offers to give her enough money to purchase an inn.
Towers of Midnight
Setalle is with Faile’s group in Tar Valon awaiting a gateway to the Field of Merrilor in order to give Mat the horn of Valere. The Horn has been disguised as a cask of Tabac for Master Cauthon. A bubble of evil strikes and Berisha makes a gateway for the group to go through to avoid being caught in the bubble. When on the other side, the group determines they are not at the Field of Merrilor, but in the Blight instead. They are suspicious Berisha is Black Ajah and sent them to the Blight on purpose. Setalle confers with Faile and they decide to wait one day for rescue before moving on to Shayol Ghul in hopes of hopping a gateway to the battlefield. Setalle tells Faile about having been burned out 25 years ago.
From the Companion: Setalle survives the last battle. Setalle is relieved when Nynaeve tells her that there is nothing left to be healed of Setalle being burned out. Setalle would rather live her life as a regular person with her family than go back to being Aes Sedai.
A Memory of Light
Character Summaries
Special Abilities
Prior to being burned out in 973 NE, Setalle (then Martine Janata), was considered very strong in the One Power. Her power level was 14(2), which is only one level lower than Moiraine at the beginning of the story. She was a Brown who studied ter’angreal, and we are unsure if she actually made any discoveries in the subject. It is implied that she knows how to use the curved belt knife she wears.
Notable Possessions
Her only notable possession during the series is the Wandering Woman Inn that she owns in Ebou Dar. It is directly across from the Tarasin Palace and many high ranking nobles frequent the Inn.
Legacy
Setalle will be remembered as a kind-hearted person, who was always willing to help young women in need. She was instrumental in Nynaeve and Elayne finding the Bowl of the Winds. She hid Joline and her Warders from the Seanchan, even though being found with them would have meant dire consequences. She often gives Mat good counsel. She was also a part of the group that carried the Horn of Valere through the Blight during the Last Battle.
"The One Who is No Longer"
In Lord of Chaos, Bair, Amys, and Melaine have a dream concerning the Bowl of the Winds.
“All three Dreamwalkers had this dream, which makes it especially significant. Rain….coming from a bowl. There are snares and pitfalls around the bowl. If the right hands pick it up, they will find a treasure perhaps as great as the bowl. In the wrong hands, the world is doomed. The key to finding the bowl is to find the one who is no longer.”
-Bair
This quote very likely refers to Setalle who is instrumental in helping the Elayne and Nynaeve find the Bowl of the Winds. She introduces to the Kin, which in turn leads to the Kin's storeroom where the Bowl of the Winds was located.
In Other Media
No one has been cast in the role of Setalle Anan yet for the upcoming Amazon Wheel of Time television show.
